🎹 Why I Continue to Write and Produce Music: A Legacy of Love, Loss, and Sound

Published on 30 April 2025 at 18:47

For many artists, music is a career.
For me, it's something deeper—something sacred.
It’s a lifeline. A legacy. A tribute.

My journey as a composer, pianist, and producer isn’t just about creativity—it's about connection. And that connection begins with the two people who first believed in me: my parents.

πŸ’” A Mother’s Love, Lost Too Soon

In 2011, I lost my mother, Elaine A. Norkawich, to breast and uterine cancer. She was the heartbeat of our family, the one who never raised her voice but always raised my spirits. She celebrated my small wins like they were gold medals and believed in me before I ever believed in myself. Her absence is a quiet ache I carry every day, but through music, I still hear her voice—encouraging me to keep going, to keep creating, to keep sharing.

πŸ˜” A Father’s Strength, Gone but Never Forgotten

In 2021, I lost my father, Donald E. Norkawich, to COVID-related complications. He was my biggest fan, my constant cheerleader, and the one who taught me the value of hard work and integrity. He stood beside me at every recital, told everyone he knew about my albums, and inspired me to push further—even when the road got tough. His voice still echoes in my mind, saying, “You’ve got what it takes, son.” I carry that with me every time I enter the studio.

🎢 Music: My Way Back to Them

Grief is never linear, but music has given me something extraordinary: the ability to transform pain into purpose. Every chord I play and every lyric I write is filled with their memory. The joy of our holidays together. The lessons they taught me. The strength they gave me when they could no longer be here in person.

My albums—Yesterday, Today, Just Getting Started, A Connecticut Christmas, Christmas By the Seaside, and many more—are more than music. They’re testaments. They’re the audible pages of my life story. They are my way of telling the world: I remember. I honor. I continue because they gave me the gift of music to begin with.

πŸ•ŠοΈ Why I Continue

I make music to heal.
I make music to remember.
I make music to inspire others who are grieving or struggling.
I make music because I know somewhere, they’re listening too.
