Born on March 28, 1975, in Bridgeport, Connecticut, to Donald E. Norkawich and Elaine A. Norkawich, James was surrounded by music from the beginning.

At just three years old, he developed a fascination with the chord organ. His grandfather, Albert J. Kaufman, a self-taught organist and founder of Connecticut's first amateur organ society, recognized something unusual in the young musician and began encouraging his natural ability.

At five, he began formal lessons at Verelli Music Studios in Bridgeport. He later studied organ with Frank Markham at Westport Music in Westport, Connecticut, developing the technique, musical vocabulary, and discipline that would become the foundation of his career.

Between the ages of nine and fourteen, James began receiving recognition for his abilities, including success in the WICC 600 AM Talent Contest and attention from local media as a promising young musician.
