🎶 A Life in Full Harmony: Growing Up Norkawich 🎹

Published on 12 April 2025 at 18:03

When I look back over my life, it’s not the spotlight or applause that comes first to mind—it’s family. It’s the sound of my mother’s voice, my father’s steady encouragement, the laughter I shared with my sister, and the unwavering love of my wife. My story begins not on stage, but in the living room of a modest home filled with warmth, values, and music.

I was born into the loving care of Donald E. Norkawich and Elaine A. Norkawich, two extraordinary individuals who gave me everything I needed to grow—faith, structure, discipline, and freedom to dream. They believed in me before I even understood who I was, and they allowed my artistic spirit to flourish. It was their love that became the foundation for everything I am today.

At just three years old, I sat down at a chord organ, and something remarkable happened. Those small plastic keys became my first real connection to the world of sound and emotion. It was as if music had been waiting for me—and I, unknowingly, had been waiting for it.

My grandfather played a vital role in that discovery. A gifted organist who played entirely by ear, he was a master storyteller through sound. It was from him that I learned about some of the greatest names in theatre and sacred organ music—Rosa Rio, Father James Miller, Lyn Larsen, and Larry Ferrari. These weren’t just names in a textbook. Through my grandfather, I got to feel their brilliance—and in some cases, meet them in person. That kind of personal, direct connection with legends of the instrument left an indelible mark on me.

My grandfather didn’t just teach; he led. He founded the Connecticut Valley Theatre Organ Society (CVTOS) to help preserve the rich tradition of theatre organ music. Following in his footsteps, I proudly became a member and later joined the American Theatre Organ Society (ATOS), carrying forward a legacy rooted in history and heart.

My childhood in Bridgeport, Connecticut was filled with joy. Whether it was long drives with my family, afternoons spent watching my grandfather play, or Sunday dinners that turned into impromptu concerts, everything revolved around togetherness and sound. My sister, Deanna M. Norkawich, has always been one of my greatest champions. She’s seen the dream from the beginning, and her encouragement, laughter, and love continue to be a source of strength. There’s something powerful about having someone who remembers where you started and still believes in where you're going.

When it came time for college, I was awarded undergraduate and master’s degree scholarships to the University of Bridgeport, where I formally studied music. Those years expanded my understanding of the art. I explored not only technique but meaning—what music can do to people. My education refined my skills, introduced me to incredible mentors, and reinforced the belief that music is not just a profession—it’s a calling. One that can uplift, inspire, and connect.

During those formative years, I gravitated toward the Hammond organ, an instrument known for its rich, soulful voice. It became a natural extension of me—dynamic, emotional, and honest. When I was named an official Hammond Artist, it wasn’t just a career milestone. It was a personal one. It was acknowledgment of a journey that began in childhood, fueled by the passion of my grandfather, and grounded in years of hard work and learning.

Through it all, there has been one person by my side who has truly seen it all—my wife, Daria M. Norkawich. Daria is my partner in every sense of the word. Her unwavering belief in me, her support through every late-night studio session and performance, and her love through every twist and turn, have been gifts I never take for granted. She makes the music sweeter, the mission clearer, and the life fuller.

Now, with the release of my latest album, Just Getting Started, I feel like I’ve only scratched the surface of what’s to come. This album isn’t just a collection of songs. It’s a declaration—that no matter how far we’ve come, the road ahead is even more exciting.

And as I continue forward, every chord I play echoes the voices of those who made me—my parents, who taught me to believe; my grandfather, who gave me legacy; my sister, who gave me courage; and my wife, who gives me love.

This isn’t just my story. It’s our story.

It’s the Norkawich Legacy.

And we’re just getting started.
